Spelling is remembered through active retrieval, not copying. The best spelling activities make students look at, say, write and re-draw a word from memory - and do it in a way that feels like a game.

Daily practice that builds recall
- Look-Say-Cover-Write-Check - the classic that works: look, say it aloud, cover, write from memory, check.
- Rainbow write - write the word three times in three colors.
- Pyramid words - one letter on line 1, two on line 2, up to the full word.
- Word staircase - build the word by syllables, clapping each chunk.
Movement spelling
- Sky write - trace the word huge in the air.
- Back writing - partners trace the word on each other's backs and guess.
- Hop-spell - hop once per letter, jump on the last letter.
- Spelling relay - teams run to the board to write one correct letter each.
