Group Activities for Students
12 collaborative activities that build teamwork and communication skills.
1. Jigsaw Reading
Assign each group member a different section of a text. They read their part, become the "expert," then teach it to the rest of the group.
2. Group Research Project
Each group researches a topic, compiles findings, and presents to the class. Assign roles: researcher, writer, illustrator, presenter.
3. Collaborative Mural
Groups create a large mural on butcher paper representing a concept from class. Each member contributes a section that connects together.
4. Team Problem Solving
Give each team a complex problem or puzzle. They must work together, discuss strategies, and find a solution. First team with the correct solution wins.
5. Group Storytelling
Each group writes a story together. One person writes the beginning, passes it to the next for the middle, and the third writes the ending. Read aloud!
6. Peer Teaching
Students take turns teaching a concept to their group. Each person prepares a mini-lesson. Teaching is the best way to learn!
7. Group Debate
Assign teams a topic to debate. Give preparation time, then hold structured debates with opening statements, rebuttals, and closing remarks.
8. Science Experiment Teams
Groups follow experiment instructions, record observations, and draw conclusions together. Assign roles: materials manager, recorder, timer, reporter.
9. Book Club
Small groups read the same book independently, then meet to discuss. Use discussion cards with prompts like "What surprised you?" and "Why did the character...?"
10. Design Challenge
Give groups a challenge: build the tallest tower with spaghetti and marshmallows, design a bridge from paper, etc. Test and compare results.
11. Community Map
Groups create a map of their classroom, school, or neighborhood. Include landmarks, directions, and a map key with symbols.
12. Group Songs
Groups write and perform a short song or rap about a class topic. Provide a simple beat or melody. Perform for the class!
