12 fun activities designed to build English language skills.
1. Vocabulary Bingo
Create bingo cards with target vocabulary words. Teacher reads definitions. Students find and mark the matching word. First to get 5 in a row wins!
2. Picture Description
Show a detailed picture. Students take turns describing what they see using target vocabulary and sentence structures. Great for speaking practice.
3. Role Play
Give students scenario cards (ordering food, asking directions, visiting a doctor). Pairs practice the dialogue, then perform for the class.
4. Word Chain
First student says a word. Next student must say a word that starts with the last letter of the previous word. Can be themed (animals, food, etc.).
5. Find the Difference
Give pairs two similar pictures. They must describe and discuss differences using target language. "In picture A, the cat is on the table."
6. Survey Activity
Students create survey questions and walk around the class interviewing classmates. Record answers, then present findings to the class using statistics.
7. Spelling Bee
Teacher says a word and uses it in a sentence. Students spell it out loud. Keep a spelling list related to current vocabulary themes.
8. News Reporter
Students write a short news report about a made-up event, then present it as a TV news reporter. Focus on past tense and reporting language.
9. Rhyming Game
Teacher says a word. Students brainstorm words that rhyme. For advanced students, write rhyming couplets or short poems together.
10. Idiom of the Day
Introduce a new idiom each day. Explain the meaning, give examples, and have students use it in sentences. Keep an idiom wall in the classroom.
11. Category Sort
Give groups a set of vocabulary cards. They must sort them into categories, create category names, and explain their sorting logic to the class.
12. Sentence Building
Give groups a set of word cards (nouns, verbs, adjectives). They arrange them into sentences, then create questions and negatives from those sentences.
