How to Play with Preschoolers

  1. Keep it simple: Use 3x3 or 4x4 grids instead of 5x5. Fewer squares mean shorter games that match attention spans.
  2. Use pictures: Include a picture with each word on the card. Preschoolers can match the picture even if they can't read yet.
  3. Call with enthusiasm: Use expressive voices and gestures when calling words. "Look! It's a CIRCLE! Round like a ball!"
  4. Use physical markers: Let students place stickers, stamps, or large counters. The fine motor practice is a bonus skill.
  5. Celebrate everyone: Give small prizes or stickers to all players, not just the winner. Every child should feel successful.

Tips for Teachers

Short Sessions

Keep bingo sessions to 10-15 minutes. Preschoolers have limited attention spans. One round is plenty — save cards for another day.

Repetition Matters

Play the same theme multiple times across the week. Preschoolers learn through repetition. By the third round, they'll be calling words before you do.

Multisensory Approach

Say the word, show the picture, make the sound, and do a gesture for each item. Engaging multiple senses helps preschoolers learn and remember.

Combine Themes

Mix themes on one card — shapes AND colors, animals AND numbers. This challenges students to switch between categories and builds flexible thinking.
