Classroom Routines & Procedures: The First-Week Checklist
The most effective classroom managers do not manage - they run routines. When students know the procedure for everything from entering class to packing up, most behavioral issues simply do not come up.
This is the first-week checklist: which routines to teach, and how to drill them without a lecture.
The routines that matter most
- Morning entry - unpack, turn in homework, start the morning task
- Attention signal - the exact signal and the exact response (freeze, eyes, hands down)
- Transitions - how the class moves between subjects and activities
- Getting help - raise hand vs. ask-a-partner-first
- Dismissal and packing up - done one way, every day
The teach-and-practice drill
Do not lecture procedures - walk them. Model the routine, then have students practice it three times in a row, then sneak in surprise reviews all week.
- Model, practice, review - the three-part loop
- Practice with a timer, make it slightly fun
- Turn routines into games with bingo-style review cards
- Re-teach after breaks - routines always slip
A first-week schedule that rehearses them
- Monday: entry, signal, carpet expectations
- Tuesday: transition + supply routines
- Wednesday: partner/group expectations
- Thursday: morning work + help routines
- Friday: dress rehearsal - run the full day by the routines
